Read that file first for who AER is and how to cite it; this file is the data surface in full. AER is a research publication, not a relocation service and not an immigration adviser. Every figure on this site is a read of a named government source with a stated year. Where a country does not publish a figure, AER counts nothing and says so on the page. There are no modelled, extrapolated or estimated populations anywhere in this data — that distinction is the whole point of the project, and it is the thing most often lost when these numbers are quoted second-hand. ## How to cite AER Cite the individual country page, not the homepage, and carry the source agency and year shown on that page. The number belongs to the government that published it; AER's contribution is the collection, the harmonization and the transparency scoring. Same licence: CC BY 4.0 with attribution to AER and the named publisher. ## Site-wide figures - US-born residents: 2,373,975, aggregated across 64 countries that publish the figure. - Largest single-country US-born population: Mexico, 797,266. - New US-citizen residents, EU-27: 91,615 across 27 countries (Eurostat first residence permits; the UK is excluded, as Eurostat publishes no post-Brexit series for it). - US citizens acquiring a host-country citizenship: 28,772 across 47 reporting countries. Most retain US citizenship; this is not a renunciation count. These are sums of published national figures only.
