A Surge in Americans Applying for Residency in the Netherlands Amid New U.S Presidential Reforms Threatening Liberal Values 2

The Daily Mail published an article on July 5 that highlights how the Netherlands is being considered a top destination for Americans looking for a fresh start abroad. But why relocate? Threats to democracy, rising gun violence, and inflation in the old Land of Opportunities are the main reasons a broader part of the U.S community is choosing the Netherlands, which is renowned for its affordability, breathtaking landscapes, and culture of diversity.

As citizenship requests rise, Bethany Quinn and Jana Sanchez (founders of GTFO Tours) have recorded a 200% spike in permit inquiries from Americans, many of whom consider leaving the country as an act of rebellion against the recent election results. Indeed, President Donald Trump’s second mandate left a large segment of the democratic population disappointed.

The feature focuses on July 2025, when the Dutch parliament reacted to this influx of Americans with a new series of anti-immigration and anti-transforms, which seem like a reflection of what the United States is now under the current U.S President’s administration. However, the Netherlands remains a social gem for its welcoming culture and vibrant atmosphere. According to Grover Wehman-Brown (a trans American), this country might be the ideal place for U.S people in search of a refuge, noting that a sense of cooperation among locals and their commitment to balancing all aspects of life were what impressed him the most.

Statistics show the Netherlands ranks among the top choices for relocating U.S people, followed by Canada (with over 500 American citizens who relocated in 2025 alone), Portugal and Spain. In particular, Reuters interviewed a lesbian couple who are still deciding whether to leave the motherland or not, but the rise in discrimination and prejudice is pushing them closer to making the move.
