Why Denmark's Records, Not Washington's

The Context

The context every page needs: who counts Americans abroad, and who doesn't.

The United States publishes no count of its own citizens abroad. Its best federal figure, 3.3 million Americans worldwide, is a statistical model built to size the overseas electorate, and the same model said 4.4 million two years earlier. The Census Bureau decided in 1976 to exclude private Americans abroad from the decennial enumeration (overseas federal employees and military are still counted). What Washington publishes instead is fragments: Social Security checks mailed to foreign addresses, tax returns claiming foreign income, quarterly lists of people who gave up their citizenship. See what each federal source actually counts ›

So this project counts from the receiving side. Every figure on this page comes from records Denmark itself publishes, read under the same rules applied to every country in the project. Where Denmark publishes, it is counted and cited. Where it does not, the gap is shown rather than filled: no estimates, no models. How openly each country reports ›

What the Research Found

The Findings

Findings from the Denmark research, drawn from the official record.

Findings
by Daniel ATZ
The number of initial residence permits issued to US citizens rose from 4,157 in 2015 to 5,183 in 2024, with a dip in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 and a full recovery by 2022.
Education is the dominant pathway: permits issued for study rose from 3,021 in 2015 to 3,778 in 2024, making Denmark one of the strongest education-driven destinations for US nationals in Europe.
The total stock of residence permits held by US nationals increased moderately, from 8,640 in 2015 to 9,750 in 2024, while long-term permits held broadly steady between about 2,200 and 2,700 across the decade.
Naturalizations of US nationals fluctuate sharply year to year: 108 US citizens acquired Danish citizenship in 2024, against spikes of 290 in 2015 and 248 in 2017. Danish citizenship statistics do not separate naturalization from descent-based acquisition.
Statistics Denmark identifies US-born residents in detail: StatBank reports 17,663 residents of Denmark born in the United States in 2026, against roughly 8,000 to 9,000 US citizens. The gap reflects children of Americans and naturalized former US citizens counted by birthplace but not by citizenship.
Population data by citizenship are published only in aggregate, so the US-citizen series leans on Eurostat, while Danish register data carry the detail on residence, citizenship acquisition and country of birth.

The gaps: Published as a regular series: US-born residents, annual arrivals, naturalizations, residence or work permits. Published only partially or as one-off estimates: resident US citizens. What the partial figures can support: Citizens comes as a one-off figure rather than a yearly series: good for a snapshot of today, not for reading a trend.
