How Many Americans Live in Belize

Belize's censuses show an American-born population that surged for a decade and has thinned since. Between censuses the country publishes nothing, so years can pass between answers.

Why Belize's Records, Not Washington's

The Context

The context every page needs: who counts Americans abroad, and who doesn't.

The United States publishes no count of its own citizens abroad. Its best federal figure, 3.3 million Americans worldwide, is a statistical model built to size the overseas electorate, and the same model said 4.4 million two years earlier. The Census Bureau decided in 1976 to exclude private Americans abroad from the decennial enumeration (overseas federal employees and military are still counted). What Washington publishes instead is fragments: Social Security checks mailed to foreign addresses, tax returns claiming foreign income, quarterly lists of people who gave up their citizenship. See what each federal source actually counts ›

So this project counts from the receiving side. Every figure on this page comes from records Belize itself publishes, read under the same rules applied to every country in the project. Where Belize publishes, it is counted and cited. Where it does not, the gap is shown rather than filled: no estimates, no models. How openly each country reports ›

What the Research Found

The Findings

Findings from the Belize research, drawn from the official record.

Findings
by Daniel ATZ
Foreign-born population growth driven by U.S.-born residents, followed by recent decline Census data show a substantial increase in the U.S.-born population between 2000 and 2010 (+89%), followed by a notable decline between 2010 and 2022 (-16.5%).
Overall, the U.S.-born population remains significantly higher than in 2000, indicating long-term growth despite recent contraction.
No observable migration flows or residency pathways in official statistics There are no publicly available data on residence permits, visas, or citizenship grants.
As a result, it is not possible to analyze migration flows, entry channels, or legal status transitions for U.S. nationals.
Census data provide the only consistent statistical visibility Analysis of U.S. nationals relies entirely on census-based country-of-birth data.

The gaps: Published only partially or as one-off estimates: US-born residents. Not published: resident US citizens, annual arrivals, naturalizations, residence or work permits: those gaps set the grade; they do not make the published figures wrong. What the partial figures can support: US-Born comes as a one-off figure rather than a yearly series: good for a snapshot of today, not for reading a trend.

Known Data Discrepancies
Belize: the census counts of US-born residents do not form a steady trend

The census points from 2000, 2010 and 2022 move up and down rather than tracing a single direction, so no trend should be read into them. This page shows 2,985 from the 2022 census, the latest available point, and it is essentially the only published US-disaggregated figure for Belize. No annual series exists.
