The United States publishes no count of its own citizens abroad. Its best federal figure, 3.3 million Americans worldwide, is a statistical model built to size the overseas electorate, and the same model said 4.4 million two years earlier. The Census Bureau decided in 1976 to exclude private Americans abroad from the decennial enumeration (overseas federal employees and military are still counted). What Washington publishes instead is fragments: Social Security checks mailed to foreign addresses, tax returns claiming foreign income, quarterly lists of people who gave up their citizenship. A record 246,528 American stay-over visitors in 2025 — winter-heavy, with July as the surprise second peak. The 2020–21 floor (single-digit months) and the V-shaped recovery are the sharpest in the Caribbean set.
Both censuses show the same signature: the largest US-born cohorts are children and teenagers — the US-born kids of returning Bajan families — with a smaller retiree shoulder. The population halved between censuses.

The gaps: Published only partially or as one-off estimates: US-born residents. Not published: resident US citizens, annual arrivals, naturalizations, residence or work permits: those gaps set the grade; they do not make the published figures wrong. What the partial figures can support: US-Born comes as a one-off figure rather than a yearly series: good for a snapshot of today, not for reading a trend.
The headline figure on this page is the BSS Census 2020 US-born count of 438, chosen because it is direct household enumeration rather than a modelled estimate, because it is current to the 2-year framework window, and because it comes from the country's own statistical authority. The UN DESA bilateral stock series is retained for reference but is not carried as a headline migration flow.
