The United States publishes no count of its own citizens abroad. Its best federal figure, 3.3 million Americans worldwide, is a statistical model built to size the overseas electorate, and the same model said 4.4 million two years earlier. The Census Bureau decided in 1976 to exclude private Americans abroad from the decennial enumeration (overseas federal employees and military are still counted). Temporary Residence is the dominant US settlement pathway by volume (61% of total 2025 issuance). Category frameworks are country-specific and not comparable across countries.

The 4.2 million airport arrivals often quoted are visitors, not migrants. For residents, this page uses the US-born figure of 10,016 from the 2017 ENI survey, flagged prominently as stale: nine years old, survey-based, and never refreshed. It stays because it is the most recent direct US-born count in any Dominican public source.
