A June report published by The Hill analyzes how the United States is experiencing a wave of emigration from citizens opposed to the U.S President’s reforms and administration, which they believe is threatening the nation’s democratic values and social fabric. Particularly, Expatsi (a platform for Americans planning to leave the States) has shared the results of a study, in which over 116,000 U.S residents revealed where they would want or are about to head in 2024 alone. But why choose to leave? The desire comes from a national collapse characterized by a strong polarization, social division, lack of freedom and rising inflation. Question by question, Americans assessed their preferences on salaries, climate, political context, language, which led Expatsi to reveal the top three destinations: Portugal (48% of respondents thanks to the low crime rates and affordability), France (46%) and Spain (44%). Following that, we find: Greece (44%), Switzerland (43%), Austria (40%), Luxembourg (38%), Belgium (35%), Slovenia (34%), and Norway (33%).
According to Forbes, Portugal steals the spotlight with a 240% spike of Americans who relocated there in the last five years following discontent from the last two American elections. But reports by the AARO notes the California of Europe isn’t the only magnet for U.S residents, many of whom (up to 2 millions) are moving to nearby Mexico and Canada, known for their welcoming community, expats incentives, and vibrant atmosphere.
